A 'Junkie' Puts Up His Dukes
WASHINGTON POST -- Reliable Source - Friday, December 8
Let's get ready to rum-ble! J.P. Flaim, co-host of WJFK's "The Junkies," is gearing up for his first (and probably last) boxing match tomorrow at the Patriot Center against fresh-out-of-prison pro middleweight Jay Watts. "I've had no wrestling, boxing, karate -- any type of that experience up until a couple of months ago," the 36-year-old told us. And yes, his wife thinks he's "a little bit crazy."
So, um, why? The radio personality says he's pals with Jimmy Lange (the Great Falls-based contestant on reality boxing show "The Contender") and had a "crazy, light-bulb moment" while watching one of his fights. Flaim took the plunge and has been training several hours a day for the past two months under boxing coach Willie Taylor.
"I've sparred 30 rounds against some talented kids," Flaim said. "I can get through four rounds pretty easily now." He's even got the smack talk down: "My guess is he's going to think this is a radio DJ who is doing a radio stunt and is going to try to decapitate me. . . . I'm going to fire back and I'm going to hit him in the face."
Or vice versa. Good thing he's in radio.
